4x4 CIRCUIT – DJERBA, TOZEUR & DOUZ

A private 3-day 4x4 adventure from Djerba into the heart of southern Tunisia. Discover the lush palm groves of Tozeur, the silence of the Sahara desert at Douz and Ksar Ghilane, the lunar landscapes of Matmata, the Berber villages of Chenini and Guermessa, and the troglodyte houses and ksour of mountain ridges. The south of Tunisia is a world waiting to be explored.

PROGRAM:

 

Day 1: 

  • Morning departure, crossing by ferry from Djerba.

  • Stop in Matmata: visit a troglodyte house with a warm welcome of rosemary tea, olive oil, and honey.

  • Continue towards Tozeur via the Chott El Jerid, the largest salt lake in Africa – photo stop.

  • Head to the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza: enjoy lunch with locals, then visit the famous waterfall of Tamerza and the Berber village and oasis of Chebika at the foothills of the Saharan Atlas.

  • Dinner and overnight in Tozeur (hotel).

Day 2:

  • Breakfast and visit of the old medina of Tozeur.

  • Departure towards Douz, the “Gateway to the Desert” – with the option of a quad ride in the dunes (extra).

  • Lunch and continue to Ksar Ghilane, a small exotic oasis in the middle of the Sahara, famous for its hot thermal spring. Free time for swimming.

  • Optional activities: quad or camel ride (extra) to the Roman fort in the desert.

  • Continue to Zmela Camp (approx. 20 km).

  • Enjoy the sunset over the dunes, followed by dinner and a traditional Saharan evening.

  • Night in a Berber tent under the desert sky.

Day 3:

  • Breakfast at the camp.

  • Departure to visit Ksar Hadada, a collective granary and filming location of Star Wars.

  • Continue to Chenini, a Berber village carved into the mountainside, famous for its ksour and troglodyte dwellings (45-minute guided walk).

  • Lunch and then visit Tataouine and its colorful market.

  • Return to Djerba via the Roman Causeway.
