EXCURSION TO KSAR GHILANE & MATMATA

Departure from Djerba or Zarzis

A truly unique excursion that feels like a journey back in time. Each stage offers new landscapes and a new story: from nomadic life in a desert oasis, to the Berber way of life in troglodyte villages, and even the famous Star Wars filming locations. All in a single unforgettable day.

 

EXCURSION PROGRAM:

  • Departure via the Roman Causeway (El Kantara), a 7 km-long bridge linking Djerba to the mainland. Stop for photos before continuing towards Médenine.

  • Coffee break and briefing about the day’s program.

  • Drive away from the big towns, passing through small villages near Beni Kheddach, until the paved road ends.

  • Begin your journey across the stony desert (reg) with a photo stop in the middle of the rocky landscape.

  • Continue to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, located at the edge of the Great Eastern Erg.

  • Free time to explore the oasis and its natural hot spring. Optional activities available on site:

    • Camel ride (1 hour = 15 €)

    • Quad ride (35 €)

    • Swimming in the hot spring

  • Lunch included.

  • Departure to Matmata.

  • Stop in Tamazret for photos (approx. 15 minutes).

  • Arrival in Matmata: visit a traditional troglodyte home with locals, enjoy rosemary tea, homemade bread served with olive oil and honey.

  • Continue towards Djerba, passing through the Berber village of Toujane (photo stop) and visit Ksar Metameur, a well-preserved collective granary.

  • Arrival back at your hotel.

This excursion is conducted with a licensed guide approved by the Tunisian National Tourism Office.

 

 Ksar Ghilane : An oasis located on the eastern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental. In the heart of this oasis, a hot spring emerges, offering peace and refreshing comfort.

A camel ride will give you a true taste of the desert’s magic.

For adventure lovers, a quad biking tour will take you across the sand dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, with a visit to the Roman fort of Tisavar.
