EXCURSION TO MATMATA & DOUZ
Departure from Djerba or Zarzis
Douz is known as the “Gateway to the Great Eastern Erg” where the first dunes of the Sahara rise. The region of Matmata, in southern Tunisia, is famous for its desert plateaus and unique troglodyte houses—Berber dwellings dug into the ground and organized around an open courtyard.
EXCURSION PROGRAM :
Morning departure by ferry, crossing with a boat that carries up to 30 cars.
Short photo stop at the Berber village of Tamezret.
Continue to Douz, the gateway to the desert.
Visit the sand-covered village inhabited by the M’razig, authentic camel breeders. (Optional camel ride available on site, not included).
Lunch at a hotel in Douz.
Departure to Matmata, the troglodyte village: visit a typical underground house of the region and explore the famous “Star Wars” film set.
Continue towards Toujane, a traditional Berber village nestled in the Dahar mountains. Stop for photos and detailed explanations.
Return to Djerba via the 7 km Roman Causeway, linking the island to the mainland.
Arrival back at your hotel.
