GHILANE – TOZEUR: THE SAHARIAN CIRCUIT

A true journey back in time… This circuit through the wonders of southern Tunisia takes you to Berber villages, ancient ksour, the ochre landscapes of Tataouine, and the origin of the expression “to go to Tataouine”. Along the way, discover the magic of the Tunisian Sahara: endless fine sand dunes, a swim in a natural hot spring, and the legendary filming locations of Star Wars.

PROGRAM :

 

Day 1 – Discover the Ksour

  • After breakfast, departure from Djerba via the Roman Causeway, towards Tataouine for a city visit.

  • Continue to Chenini, a Berber village perched on a mountainside, known for its ksour and troglodyte houses.

  • Lunch included.

  • Stop at Ksar Haddada, a famous Star Wars filming location.

  • Arrival at Ksar Ghilane, an exotic oasis in the Sahara renowned for its thermal spring (swimming possible).

  • Camp installation. Optional camel or quad excursion (extra) to the dunes for sunset and a visit to the Roman fort.

  • Dinner, Saharan evening, and overnight in desert tents.

  • Travel time: 3h30 – 240 km | Walking time: 1h
  • Accommodation: Camp Zmela or similar (Ksar Ghilane) 

Day 2 – Discover the Djerid

 

  • Breakfast, then departure for Tozeur, with a stop in Douz, the “Gateway to the Desert,” famous for its white sand.

  • Lunch in a palm grove.

  • Cross the mythical Chott El Jerid, the largest salt lake in North Africa, known for its mirages and legends.

  • Visit the old medina of Tozeur, wander its labyrinthine streets, and immerse yourself in its unique history.

  • Optional carriage ride in the palm grove (extra).

  • Dinner and overnight at hotel in Tozeur.

  • Travel time: 3h30 – 300 km
  • Accommodation: Hotel Ras El Ain 4* or similar 

Day 3 – Escapade to the Mountain Oases

 

  • Breakfast, then departure to explore the spectacular mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Midès.

  • Discover waterfalls, canyons, and lush palm groves—true natural paradises and favorite filming sites of international filmmakers.

  • Lunch with locals.

  • Afternoon free or optional excursion to the dunes of Ong Jmel, another Star Wars set (extra).

  • Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Tozeur.

  • Travel time: 2h – 130 km | Walking time: 1h
  • Accommodation: Hotel Ras El Ain 4* or similar

Day 4 – Troglodyte Life in Matmata

  • Breakfast, then departure towards Matmata, crossing the Chott El Jerid salt lake.

  • Stop at Tamezret, an authentic Berber village far from tourist crowds.

  • Continue to Matmata, renowned for its underground homes. Visit a troglodyte family dwelling and enjoy a traditional lunch featuring rosemary tea, homemade bread, olive oil, and honey.

  • Visit the Hotel Sidi Driss, used as Luke Skywalker’s home in Star Wars.

  • Stop in the Berber village of Toujane for panoramic photos.

  • Return to Djerba.

  • Travel time: 3h30 – 300 km
