TREK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BERBERS & NOMADS

 

Two combined trekking experiences between the mountains of Dahar and the Sahara Desert.
First, a journey back in time with the indigenous Berbers, a people who mastered the challenges of nature and the rugged mountain terrain. You will walk through valleys, shepherds’ trails, and villages carved into the rock or perched on cliffs.

 

Then, a journey into the infinite space of the dunes, following the steady rhythm of the camels, guided by men born with sand in their eyes.

8 Days / 7 Nights

PROGRAM :

 

Day 1: Arrival in Djerba

  • Welcome at Djerba airport and transfer to a caravanserai or guesthouse.
    Dinner and overnight stay.

 

Day 2: Hike between Douiret and Chenini

 

  • After breakfast, transfer to Douiret and guided walk through the abandoned Berber village.
  • Lunch in Douiret.
  • In the afternoon, trek from Douiret to Chenini, a Berber village still inhabited today, accompanied by the guide and his donkey.
  • Dinner and overnight in a troglodyte guesthouse in Chenini.

 

Day 3: Hike to Guermessa 

 

  • Breakfast, then departure towards Guermessa, a ksar citadel and abandoned Berber village reached after a 4-hour hike across the Dahar mountain trails, with magnificent views of the Djeffara plain.
  • Picnic lunch en route.
  • At Guermessa, meet the vehicle transfer to Zammour.
  • Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in Zammour.

 

Day 4: Hike from Zammour to Toujane

 

  • Morning departure with the guide and his mule towards Toujane, a beautiful Berber village reached after a 5-hour hike along stony trails and valleys.
  • Picnic lunch en route.
  • At Toujane, meet the driver and continue to Matmata.
  • Dinner and overnight in a troglodyte hotel

Day 5: Departure for the Desert Trek

 

  • Drive to Douz, the “Gateway to the Desert”. Visit the Sahara Museum dedicated to the life of nomads.

  • Meet the camel drivers and their dromedaries, then begin the trek into the Sahara.

  • Dinner and overnight in bivouac under Berber tents, set around a campfire.

Day 6: Life in the Sahara

 

  •  Saharan breakfast and departure with the caravan composed of a guide, camel driver, cook, and dromedaries.
  • Picnic lunch among the dunes.
  • Dinner and overnight in bivouac camp.

Day 7: Leaving the Desert – Return to Djerba

 

  • Breakfast and camp departure. Continue trekking towards the old sand-covered village of Zaafrane.
  • Lunch, then transfer back to Djerba.
  • Hotel or guesthouse check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 8: Departure Day:

  • Breakfast and transfer to Djerba airport according to flight schedule.
